The Future of Retail Design Post COVID-19

The Future of Retail Design Post COVID-19

One deadly virus has changed the entire operating system of the world. And just like any other sector, retail stores have seen a major downfall too. A lot of brands have ditched the traditional brick-and-mortar stores and opted for online mediums. But many high-end stores are looking forward to some revolutionary changes to promote the inflow of customers just like the ‘pre-COVID’ times but with updated technology.

Now, that the definition of ‘normal’ has changed for all of us, here we have rounded up a few changes that the retail store design will see in the near future.

Changes in Space Planning

Yesteryear’s retail store design majorly focused on creating rich ambiance with inviting interiors. Less attention was paid to the layout in terms of safety. But now, retail stores are completely redesigning the interiors to devise a precautious furniture layout.

For instance, instead of a single entrance, two separate entryways will be preferred for the safe movement of people. Cash counters that used to be stacked on one end of the shop, will now find a place at separate places to promote distancing amongst the people. Additionally, these counters should be covered with transparent sheets like plastic or glass for added safety.

Many retail designers are working on new materials that have self-cleaning properties. Researches show that the virus stays active on hard surfaces for 72 hours, this means that materials like wood will see a major fall in the usage. Modern, man-made materials will be used to make smart display units that require the least contact with people.

Interior designers are constantly coming with new ways to create adaptive and flexible layouts. Having a circular movement can be the best way to comply with social distancing. Customizable display racks and storage shelves should be used instead of conventional cabinets to stop the spread of infections. Minimal use of high-risk features like doorknobs should be promoted. All brands and store managers should come up with unique ways to reform the interior design of retail stores.

Changes in Hygiene

Besides doing functional amendments, a lot of importance should also be given to cleanliness and hygiene. Apart from regular clean-ups, the entire store must be cleaned with disinfectants every day. All major shops have air conditioners that require a sealed environment. Such interior spaces can become a breeding ground for the virus quickly. Hence, special ventilating units must be used to filter air regularly. Ultra-violet systems must be used at regular intervals to disinfect the store interior by killing germs and bacteria.

Botanical interior design was already on trend but this unprecedented breakout has further popularised the use of greenery indoors. Incorporating lots of plants will ensure the air is fresh and clean. Furthermore, these green plants can be styled in different ways to achieve stunning aesthetics. In stores where there is a dearth of floor space, vertical gardens can be installed. Many commercial space designers are also designing spaces with hanging plants. Sustainable design is definitely the only way to move forward!

Other facility changes should also be made, like the installation of buffer units near the entrance to check temperatures. For retail stores that require people to shop properly, hygiene products like gloves can also be provided.

Another way to control traffic inside the store is by taking appointments. Many high-end brands have started allowing people by reservations. This way the customers are also less paranoid and feel comfortable to shop. And the brands can also offer dedicated services to their loyal clients.

This is the time to learn, assess, and adapt. Being open to new ideas and taking quick actions in terms of design can help us combat the repercussions of this crazy time.
