Making Sustainable Design Beautiful

As society becomes increasingly aware of the importance of , more and more clients have shifted their focus towards elegantly sustainable interior design. In line with current trends, and driven by their awareness of our collective responsibility towards our blue planet, many interior designers are on a mission to create spaces that are as eco-conscious as they are design-forward. These are spaces that reduce waste, are more energy-efficient, and limit their use of resources throughout their life-cycle, all while achieving an elevated aesthetic.

With the aim of reducing negative environmental impact, we present four essential sustainability principles for ecologically responsible, thoughtful design:

1. Low environmental impact

Using materials that are made with ecologically responsible practices is a must.  Having said that, it’s important that natural resources such as wood and natural stone be treated responsibly! When in doubt, choose easily renewable materials (such as bamboo) that are also responsibly-sourced and harvested.

2.  Energy efficiency

In the fight against climate change, designers can play their part by incorporating renewable (non-carbon based) energy as well as reducing the amount of energy needed for lighting and climate control within the spaces they design.

3. Longevity and waste reduction

Considering how limited our planet’s resources are, we have a responsibility to create timeless spaces that don’t need to be constantly revamped and updated. We can prevent items from constantly being discarded to make room for the next big thing! The key is opting for durable, quality materials that are designed with timelessness, functionality, and flexibility in mind.

4. Health and wellbeing

Since the majority of our time is spent indoors, we need to utilize safer materials that contain lower levels of toxins and have little to no environmental impact. Designing clean spaces contributes to a happier and healthier life because conscious design is mindful of air quality, lighting, and acoustics.

All of this doesn’t mean that beautiful design is compromised. More and more companies are beginning to value sustainability, so responsible yet on-trend items are becoming more widely available and accessible to revive beauty. Any aesthetic can be achieved responsibly. We can honour our planet with the choices we make, and with sustainable interior design, we can do it beautifully.
